Description
Giclée on canvas 30×40′ (760x1020mm) This is part of the Brosnan’s Farm series depicting a couple on a small property in south east Queensland. It features many of the details familiar to fans of Sawrey’s pastoral works. The key elements to note in this image are the character of the dwelling and the modest equipment and livestock. The house is very austere with perhaps none of the flourishes of more well-to-do land holders in the vicinity. It features a kitchen built away from the living areas in case of fire (a common concern) and a outdoor toilet. The space underneath features only two horses which were probably their only transport and muscle to operate the seeder in the middle ground. A chook run, simple equipment shed, water tanks and modest crop complete the entire scene. Hugh Sawrey was never one to dwell on the hardships of small farmers in the early days of rural development but it is clear from this quiet work that his key interests when documenting country life, were with the battlers.
